The landing. . .

Can you see the taniwha at the front of my waka? He scared all the dangerous sea creatures so the mighty maori mariners can be safe. I can see the sparkling blue ocean and the golden sand!
The logs are for rolling the waka up onto the beach.
I unpacked the coconuts and some chickens to eat. We bought them on our journey.
"I'm so glad we have reached land. . ."

Roll on, roll on!

They travelled for months and months. . . Suddenly, they saw Aotearoa and sailed close to the land. They were soooooo excited to see a new land.
The next job was to drag the waka onto the golden beach, so they cut tall native trees down.
Then they rolled it over the logs like in the book "Five Green Speckled Frogs"! They dragged the waka with a rope made out of cocnut fibre.
Finally they unloaded coconuts, a juicy pig and the bananas they had left, onto the beach to save for dinner.

Paddling to a new land!

"This is me pretending to be a mighty Maori mariner. I am paddling on a waka to Aotearoa.
When I get to Aotearoa I'm going to jump off the waka and kiss the sand on the golden beach!"

Land ahoy!!

My waka's sail is made out of coconut fibre rope and woven pandanus leaves.
I am just sailing close to a new land and I can see the snow capped mountains.
"Thank goodness we have a fat juicy pig to cook tonight. . ."

Courageous mighty Maori mariners

Imagine landing on the beach. . ."I'm going to kiss the land because I made it to Aotearoa."
Tall native trees greeted the mighty maori mariners. Brave and courageous mariners suddenly saw the golden shoreline of the beach!
Next they had to cut the trees down into logs, and roll the waka on the logs so the waka can get onto the beach.
If I was a mariner I would build a waka and bring a friend and we would travel together . . .

This is my waka sailing on the wonderful, wavy water.
My mighty Maori mariner is paddling the waka to discover New Zealand like me, because I came from Burma on a boat to New Zealand as well!

Shylas waka hourua

Here is my twin hulled waka. It is sailing into the sparkling sea. My waka hourua has a wooden platform for sleeping, and keeping food and supplies safe. They bought coconuts, bananas and chickens and dogs to survive the treacherous waves!

Mighty Maori mariners and their waka hourua. . .

Long, long ago the mighty Maori mariners discovered Aotearoa.
There were seven waka travelling together, and they were called Takitimu, Mataatua.
Other wakas were called Te Arawa, Tokomaru and Kurahaupo.
Kupe led the way for the other mighty mariners. Over 80 people rowed the waka.
