The tauihu taniwha (boat taniwha)

Most taniwha have a pukana face to scare dangerous sea creatures, and the bow is the front of the waka where the tauihu lives.
They are made out of native trees that are blessed by a tohunga - priest.
Some of the waka have taniwhas.

I want to be like Kupe, but I am a 6 year old girl!!

Venetias waka hourua!

Kupe was the leader of the seven waka, and they were called Mataatua, Tainui, Te Arawa, Kurahaupo, Tokomaru, Aotea and Takitimu.
Over 80 people rowed the wakas and they were twin hulled waka.
They bought food and supplies to survive their dangerous, treacherous journey.
They bought things like bananas, coconuts, chickens and drinking water in
carved out gourds.

Our Team 1 trip!

"This is my picture about Rangitoto erupting. We made a fake mini volcano at Mission Bay.
The lava is flowing down the sides of the volcano. Venetias Dad dug a big hole with his spade and we put vinegar and baking soda and red food colouring in the crater. It was exciting when it erupted!" By Jamal (dictated to Teacher)

An eruption!

"I drew red lava coming down the side of the volcano. My volcano rocks are raining down
like the rain does. I know the magma turns into lava when it comes out of the vent."
By Shyla (Dictated to Teacher)

Whats inside a volcano?

"We are waiting for the volcanic rocks to come out. The magma chamber, at the bottom, is VERY hot. When the magma comes out it turns into lava. This is a volcano cut in half."
(Dictated to Teacher)

My volcano has erupted.

"Look at my volcano! Can you see the volcanic rocks exploding from the vent?"

Auckland Zoo - Look at Room 2!

Team 1 at Pt England School visited Auckland Zoo yesterday.
We were there to look at the wonderful animals and practice being awesome Pt. Englanders outside of the school gates too!

We were delightfully exhausted but what a wonderful learning experience.
Team 1 will post some of the writing and artwork from this over the next little while.
We are encouraging the children to use rich descriptive language - wait and see. . .

Wear it with pride!

"I can wear my uniform with pride, like Mr Burt says in assembly. This is me outside on the grass. You can see the sky too." By Patricia
